Men's Suits FAQs

A great suit starts with the right fit. At Barkers, our men’s suits are designed to look sharp, feel comfortable and move with you—because everyday style should never feel restrictive. A well-fitting Barkers suit should sit cleanly on the shoulders, follow your natural shape through the chest and waist, and allow ease of movement without excess fabric.

Our tailored fits are designed to be modern but wearable, with jackets that frame the body and trousers that sit comfortably at the waist with a clean, streamlined leg. Whether you’re choosing a merino wool suit for work, a wedding suit, or an occasion suit, the right fit ensures you look polished from every angle.

For a truly personal finish, our suits are designed to be easily tailored, helping you achieve a fit that feels made for you. Because when your suit fits well, everything else falls into place—confidence, comfort and timeless style.

Four measurements cover the essentials: chest, waist, hips and inside leg. For your chest, measure around the fullest part with the tape sitting flat across your shoulder blades. For your waist, measure at your natural waistline, not where you wear your trousers. Hips should be measured around the fullest point, roughly 20cm below the waist. Inside leg runs from the crotch seam to the ankle bone. Wear a fitted shirt when measuring and keep the tape snug but not tight. If you sit between sizes, size up and have the suit tailored down for a cleaner finish. We can also get you fitted in-store to remove any doubt.

Two suits cover most New Zealand men well. A versatile mid-grey or navy covers work, weddings and formal occasions. A second in a complementary colour or fabric such as charcoal, light grey or a merino blend. This adds variety and allows proper rotation, which extends the life of both. If suiting forms the core of your working wardrobe, three gives you a full week of wear without over-relying on any single pair.

Navy and mid-grey are the strongest choices for a wedding guest suit. Both work across formal and smart casual dress codes, photograph well in group settings and avoid clashing with the wedding party. Lighter grey and stone suits work well for summer or outdoor weddings and steer clear of colours that could compete with the bridal party. If in doubt, always check if there is a dress code for the Wedding.

Navy, charcoal and mid-grey are the three workhorses of a professional wardrobe. Navy is the most versatile starting point as it pairs with almost every shirt and shoe colour and reads as authoritative without being severe. Charcoal carries similar versatility with a slightly more formal edge, making it a strong choice for client-facing roles. Mid-grey works well year-round and lightens the overall look for warmer months. Once these three are covered, earthy tones like brown and olive offer a considered alternative for workplaces with a relaxed dress code.
